Job description:
The Operator / Cement Finisher is responsible for operating heavy equipment and performing concrete and formwork activities to support construction, maintenance, and infrastructure improvements at a metal recycling facility. This role requires hands-on experience with excavators and skid steers, along with the ability to set forms, place concrete, and finish slabs, pads, and foundations in an active industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate excavators, skid steers, loaders, and related equipment for site preparation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventive maintenance.
- Work around active recycling operations while maintaining awareness of safety hazards and traffic patterns.
Concrete & Formwork
- Build, set, and strip concrete forms for slabs, pads, foundations, equipment footings, and curbs.
- Place, spread, level, and finish concrete using hand and power tools.
- Perform concrete finishing techniques including floating, troweling, edging, and broom finishes.
- Ensure proper elevation, slope, and drainage to meet design and operational requirements.
- Assist with concrete repair, patching, and demolition as needed.
Site & Facility Support
- Assist with layout, measuring, and marking for formwork and concrete placement.
- Coordinate work with supervisors, equipment operators, and maintenance teams.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in compliance with company safety standards.
- Follow all OSHA, environmental, and facility safety requirements.
Qualifications
- Proven experience operating excavators and skid steers.
- Hands-on experience with form carpentry and concrete finishing.
- Ability to read basic drawings, grades, and layouts.
- Experience working in industrial or heavy construction environments preferred.
- Knowledge of concrete placement, curing methods, and finishing techniques.
- Strong attention to safety and quality.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Experience in metal recycling, heavy industrial, or plant environments.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Equipment operator certifications.
- Experience working around heavy machinery and mobile equipment.
- Concrete or carpentry trade certifications or apprenticeship experience.
